Why prefer Jaggery over Sugar?
Sucrose commonly known as table sugar and jaggery commonly known as GUR.
Sugar and jaggery both contains 20kcal per 5gms. Both are prepared from sugarcane (you can obtain it from other sources as well but sugarcane is used most commonly)
• Jaggery is rich in many minerals like Magnesium, potassium, calcium, selenium, manganese, zinc, Iron ; some fibre; B vitamins .
On the other hand table sugar provides you with empty calories I.e calories without any nutritive value (vitamins and minerals)
•Jaggery prevents Constipation: It has a laxative effect and stimulate the bowel movements. It activate digestive enzymes and thus helps in proper digestion of your food.
• Can prevent and Cure Iron Deficiency Anemia : jaggery contains 11mg of Iron per 100gms.
• Improved Immune Function: Minerals like zinc and selenium & anti-oxidants in jaggery can support the immune system and help recover from illnesses like common cold and the flu
• Jaggery is helpful for Migraines and hence people who gets migraine headaches should eat jaggery
